Our Mission
“To care for residents like they were our own family.”
-- Elizabeth Scott, Founder, 1949
Welcome
The Elizabeth Scott Community remains as one of the few assisted living and long-term care facilities in the area to be family owned and operated. Family ownership sets us apart from those facilities owned by large corporations. The loving care and attention of our owners extends to staff members who are hardworking, professional, and loving. In addition, our three levels of care -- Assisted Living Level I, Assisted Living Level II, and Long-Term Care -- allows us to meet the changing needs of elderly residents on a single campus.
Elizabeth Scott: A Pioneer
As the wife of a cattle farmer and mother of 11 children, Elizabeth Scott understood the value of hard work. She began her pioneering life by graduating from Ohio Northern University where she excelled in her studies and became a teacher at Eight Square School in Holland, Ohio. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth became active in the nursing field. She worked at the State Hospital as a psychiatric supervisor and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. In 1949, with the encouragement of physicians and friends, Elizabeth Scott converted her farm home into a long-term care residence. Later, her facility became the first to be licensed in the Northwest Ohio area. That farm home is still a part of our present-day facility.
The Second Generation
Along with her daughter, Mary Scott-Bucher, and son-in-law, Vern Bucher, Elizabeth Scott fought hard for improved State legislation for nursing homes and was one of the five original members of the Ohio Nursing Home Association. In 1961, Elizabeth Scott convinced her daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Vern, to purchase the Riverview Nursing Home in Waterville and manage it with the same loving care she displayed at her own nursing home. Later, they changed the name to Hillcrest Nursing Home. The Bucher's were forced to sell their own home in order to purchase the facility, a very risky yet inspiring sacrifice. After “getting their feet wet" in the industry, the Bucher's purchased The Elizabeth Scott Community in 1976. During their ownership, Mary and Vern continued to expand the business while maintaining the small family-owned atmosphere. They employed all four of their children as well as most of their grandchildren, instilling in them the same philosophy of Elizabeth Scott: "To care for residents like they were our own family." Mary and Vern Bucher maintained their ownership until 1992 when they sold The Elizabeth Scott Community to their children. Today, Mary and Vern enjoy family gatherings, yard work, trips, golfing, reading, decorating, and sharing stories with family and friends.
The Third & Fourth Generations
Paul Bucher, Owner, Grandson of Elizabeth Scott

At age 13, Paul Bucher began learning the long-term care business from the ground up -- literally -- when he buffed floors on Saturday mornings for Hillcrest Nursing Home in
Waterville
, the facility owned by his parents. As the grandson of our founder, Paul began his career at The Elizabeth Scott Community in 1976 working in maintenance. In 1981 he moved to the administrative area where he assisted his parents who had become owners. Along with his other siblings, Paul purchased The Elizabeth Scott Community from his parents in 1992. He became the sole owner in February 2007 and remains committed to fostering the “family atmosphere” established by his grandmother, Elizabeth Scott. In his very limited spare time, Paul enjoys off-road motorcycle racing, playing the bass guitar, and spending time with his friends and family.

Deb began her health care administrative career at St. Luke's Hospital in 1979 where she held various roles in the human resources department. Through the years she worked occasionally at Elizabeth Scott and in 2007 she assumed the role of Director of Human Resources. Her responsibilities include overseeing all employee services including recruitment, benefit administration, education and training, employee issues, and payroll. In her spare time she enjoys shopping with her daughter, movies, reading, and crafts.
Matt Bucher, Director of Marketing, Great-Grandson of Elizabeth Scott

Following in his father’s footsteps, Matt began learning the long-term care business at an early age. As a young boy he did landscape and lawn work in the summers for his grandparents who were the owners at the time, and he recalls being paid by his grandma for the number of buckets of weeds he would pull. Matt officially began working at Elizabeth Scott in 1998 at the age of 16 when he mowed lawns and did landscape work. Matt worked part-time in the Elizabeth Scott maintenance department until May of 2007 when he graduated from Lourdes College with a degree in business. Matt was promoted to Director of Marketing soon after graduation. In his spare time, Matt enjoys off-road motorcycle racing, hunting, spending time with his future wife (who he met at Elizabeth Scott) as well as with friends and family.
Jean Bucher, RN, Assistant Director of Nursing, Long-term Care

Jeanie graduated from Mercy College of Northwest Ohio in 2008 and began her nursing career at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, working in the medical surgical unit and intensive care. Before that, however, Jeanie worked for three years at The Elizabeth Scott Community as a resident assistant in Assisted Living Level I. But she missed the long-term care environment, so Jeanie returned to Elizabeth Scott as the Assistant Director of Nursing for Long-term Care. Jeanie and her husband, Matt, are expecting their first child in August of 2010. While preparing for the baby’s arrival, Jeanie enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, home decorating, shopping and watching movies.
Allyson Bucher, Part-Time Employee, Great-Granddaughter of Elizabeth Scott
Like the rest of her family, Allyson began working at Elizabeth Scott at a very early age and usually spends her summer days working there. Her official title is "Glorified Weed Puller". She also enjoys taking care of the flowers and working with her dad and mom doing filing and other odd jobs. In her free time, she enjoys creating movies, computer graphics, playing the drums and guitar, and spending time with friends and family.
